Ludhiana: Dr Manpreet Singh, Assistant Agronomist at Punjab Agricultural University’s Regional Research Station (Abohar), has been awarded prestigious “Jawaharlal Nehru Award 2015” for outstanding doctoral thesis research in agricultural and allied sciences. The award has been bestowed on Dr Singh by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in the area of crop sciences. The award was presented to Dr Singh during “ICAR Foundation Day and Award Ceremony” organized at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi on July 16, 2016.

Dr Singh did his Ph.D under the guidance of Dr M. S. Bhullar, Senior Agronomist, PAU. His doctoral research work in the discipline of weed science, estimated critical period of crop-weed competition for different rice cultivars under dry direct seeded system. The study demonstrated that conservation practices such as cover cropping and zero tillage increased the weed population and biomass through their effect on weed germination and reduction in the effectiveness of pre-emergence herbicides. Role of tillage in vertical seed distribution and seed bank dynamics was also studied. His research work has been published in reputed international journals, and presented at various national and international conferences.
