Patient got third Kidney transplant at DMCH - Technically challenging but still valid option
Ludhiana, November 15, 2018: Rare case of performing ‘kidney transplant’ thrice on a single patient was done recently in Renal Transplant Surgery Unit, Department of Urology at DMCH by Dr Ravi Angral (Senior Transplant Surgeon) and his team consisting of Dr Harmandeep Singh Chahal, Dr Varun, Dr Vipul and Dr Vibhushit` Kaul. Patient Anil Mehra (name changed) has undergone kidney transplant three times since 2006. His earlier surgeries has broken all notions about kidney transplant. The patient got first kidney transplant done in the year 2006 when his father donated kidney, which lasted for two years only. Then, second transplant was also done in the same year when his sister donated kidney which lasted for nine years. Now, the patient underwent third successful kidney transplant at DMCH and this time, his other sister donated her kidney. According to Dr Ravi Angral, Life of organ donated is usually difficult to predict after 10 years of span period. The patient had lost second kidney because of rejection and got his third transplant done because of his strong will and family support. Thought this time, risk of rejection was quite high and it was also risky to undergo a third transplant because it was technically more difficult surgery. This time a new spot was created to fit third kidney. Patient Anil Mehra recovered well after the surgery and have achieved normal kidney functions. He is doing well and likely to lead healthy life and will support family. Secretary of DMCH Managing Society-Mr Prem Gupta congratulated the transplant team for performing this rare surgery. He also said New Transplant Unit at DMCH is fully equipped with latest equipments and state-of-art air conditioning facilities which included Hepa filteration, positive pressure continuous air exchange system and humidity control. This reduces infection rate to minimum. Medical Supdt. Dr Sandeep Sharma (Professor & Head of Urology) congratulated the team for performing this technically challenging surgery. Principal Dr Sandeep Puri and Vice-Principal Dr GS Wander also extended their congratulations to a team of surgeons of Transplant Unit for successfully performing this tedious and complicated surgery. Dr Vikas Makkar (Professor & Head of Neurology) also expressed his happiness in the successful performance of the breakthrough surgery.
