Ludhiana, August 23, 2016: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, SBS Nagar celebrated “Parthenium Awareness Week” from 16 to 22 August 2016 at KVK & in adopted villages (Bika, Balon, Kajla, Sanawa & Ranewal Tapperian ). During this week 5 campaigns on Parthenium eradication, 1 vocational training, 2 short duration & 2 in-service trainings were organized on & off campus.

Dr.(Mrs.) Suman Kumari, Asst. Prof. (Plant Protection) aware the farmers & trainees about ill effects of Parthenium (Congress grass) on human beings & educated the farmers about the control measures of this noxious weed as a single plant produces approx. 5 -25 thousands seeds. She also explained that the most effective time of control is January and February before flowering takes place, to prevent its further spread. Safety measures adoptions while uprooting the noxious weed were also advised to the staff members. She also stressed on making compost from Parthenium hysterophores.

Dr.Tejbeer Singh, Asst. Prof. (Animal Sciences) & Dr. Gurinder Singh Demonstrator (A.Sc.) explained the farmers about the ill effects of parthenium on animal health & milk quality.

Dr. Navjot Singh Asst. Prof. (Vegetable science) during in-service training programme trained the field staff about the eradication of weed, congress grass control chemically by spraying 1 liter Roundup & manually by uprooting the congress grass.

Mrs. Renu Bala, Demonstrator (Home Science) during In-service training of Aaganwadi workers & secretaries of cooperative societies and field staff explained about eradication of parthenium from open & barn lands so that this plant will not grow again & again.

Dr. Jugraj Singh Marok, Deputy Director (Training) informed about the adverse effects of congress grass or gajar booti (parthenium) in all KVK trainings & said its one of the most obnoxious weeds and its management through weedicides and organic agents is possible.

In his message he requested the farmers & villagers to make all necessary efforts to eradicate this weed.
