Chandigarh, August 3, 2016: Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh has issued directions to the Mess/Canteen Contractors and PU shopkeepers for taking utmost care about hygiene and Sanitation in the Hostels Mess and Canteens, Student Centre shops and Department Canteens.
Dean Students Welfare (DSW) office has directed the contractors to give utmost importance to the hygiene in the areas of cooking and serving of food. All The contractors have been asked to ensure that they have procured the Food license from the Health Department of Chandigarh Administration.
As per the directions, all the workers would wear gloves and caps. The utensils should be washed properly using detergent and water and then dipped in potassium permanganate solution. All the vegetables, rice, dals, etc used should be washed properly before cooking. Filtered water should be used for cooking. The medical check up of workers including part time workers should be done every three months and a copy of the same should be submitted in the office of the respective Wardens.
The contractors have been directed to ensure that the nails and hair of workers should be cut properly and they should be dressed in clean clothes. The worker who is cleaning the tables and washing utensils should not serve the students. The dining hall should be cleaned immediately after every meal. A clean cloth should be used for cleaning the tables. All raw materials should be stored in closed containers. No food coloring should be used in any of the cooked items. No thickening agent should be used to thicken the Dals, etc. No under age worker (as per labour laws) should be working in the University Hostels or Canteens
As per the notice displayed on all notice boards of the University, the mess and canteens would be open to inspection on the instructed parameters by the mess committee members, Warden, Office In charge, Dietician, DSW’S or any other senior officials at any time. The contractors will be fined heavily in case the instructions were not followed.
