Panjab University consistently holds high rank over all as well in specific subjects in the Times Higher Education Rankings

       The attached table give a comparative idea of how changes in the rankings happened, he added.

       Prof Lochan said that we looked at the ranking of the following universities: AMU, BHU, Calcutta, Jadavpur, JNU, Panjab U and Tezpur. In 2017 and 2018 a number of universities like Pune, Amrita, Andhra Osmania too joined the rankings but typically their subject rank was lower than our chosen sample. Also, to reduce clutter we ignored them. However, they are powerful competitors coming up quickly. Even their absolute scores are just a tad lower than the top rankers. Delhi University has been a late entrant and has scored high in the engineering and science subjects.  Since scores for DU were available only for two years and even in those it did not outrank PU, we have left those out for the moment, informed Prof Lochan.

He added that our purpose at present is merely to look at specific changes in the rank of a particular university

The years that were looked at were 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018.

In most of the years the top ranks over all and subject wise were taken up by the various IITs. IITs seemed to score well even in subjects that were otherwise in the domain of traditional universities. These included subjects like Economics, Laws, Sociology, Political Science.

 In some areas the subject wise top ranks were taken by traditional universities like PU. These included subjects like History, Mass Com, English, FineArts.

The graphics at the moment give an idea of change in rank of a particular university. However, they can be also put together and a comparison between different universities be made.
