PAMETI Imparts Training In Post-Harvest Management Of Agricultural Produce

Ludhiana, November 9, 2015: A five-day training programme on “Post-Harvest Management of Agricultural Produce” was organized at the Punjab Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (PAMETI), Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). A total of 16 extension officials from the state agriculture and allied departments participated in this training.

Dr H.S.Dhaliwal, Director, PAMETI asked the extension officials to transfer the practices of post-harvest technologies to the farmers so that they can reduce the quantitative and qualitative losses of agricultural produce and boost their net returns. He disclosed, “Post-harvest losses in case of cereals occur to the tune of about 10 per cent, and in case of fruits and vegetables, upto 30 per cent.”

As supply chain and marketing play a key role is this field, Dr R. K. Sharma from National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM), Sonepat interacted and discussed the global and national scenario with the trainees.

Experts from various departments of PAU and GADVASU interacted with the participants and made them aware of the latest technologies that can lead to minimization of post-harvest losses. Participants were educated about post-harvest handling of milk, meat, fish, forestry and mushrooms. An exposure visit was also organized to the Central Institute of Post-Harvest Engineering and Technology (CIPHET), Ludhiana wherein trainees were acquainted with the machinery and the technologies, developed by the institute, to help farmers reduce such losses.
