Jalandhar, January 19, 2013: After the long discussions and conciliation for unanimity for the post of NRI Sabha, Punjab president, nothing could be done and it resulted in futile exercise by the Assistant Returning Officer of the NRI Sabha Punjab-2013 ,Iqbal Singh Sandhu.
However three contesting candidates Jagjit Singh Toor (UK), Sarabjit Singh (Italy) and Gurjit Kaur both of them withdrawn from contesting election today.
Now out of the seven contestants four candidates are remained in the fray, the sitting president Kanwaljit Hayer, Jasbir Singh Shergil from UK and Pritam Singh (USA).
Earlier, during the scrutiny Kanwaljit Hyer and Jasbir Singh Shergil both of them reportedly raised an objections against each other's being the candidate.
There was an objection against Hayer that he was a British National and that is why he is not eligible for contesting the election. However, Iqbal Singh Sandhu Assistant Returning Officer said that the communique of the Additional Advocate General mentioned that the candidate could only be barred if he was neither born nor brought up in India. In case of Hayer he was born in UK, but returned to India when he was four years old. After words he did his schooling and pursued studies in the college in India. Hayer evidently proved his existence in India for the last 40 years.
Hayer also leveled allegations against Shergil but he failed to prove his version, said Sandhu.
Sandhu told that January 20 was the last date for withdrawal of the nomination papers and the poling would be held on January 27.
