Panchkula, June 30, 2014: “Laparoscopic surgery the keyhole surgery as it is commonly called for gall bladder, uterus, appendix and hernia has undergone significant advancements. In fact for body conscious women now the Natural Opening Surgery (NOS) the single cut surgery is fast becoming the surgery of choice over multi-incision laparoscopic surgeries.”
These views were stated by Dr K S Dhillon, Sr Consultant, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali while addressing 100 members of Panchkula Ladies club at a special health session held at Hotel Solitaire here today.
He said that currently most surgical procedures were being done by SILS (single incision/cut laparoscopic surgery ). But NOS was emerging as the more preferred treatment for female patients. The traditional gallbladder, appendix, hernia and uterus surgeries would require a 6-inch cut with standard laparoscopic surgeries, though less invasive, still require four cuts. The first impression on hearing of surgery was that of large skin incision, long hospitalisation and pain.  But laparoscopic surgery has changed the whole scenario of surgery. Now there were no big cuts, short hospital stay and substantial reduction in pain.
“The latest advancements in treatment have made laparoscopic surgery even more minimally invasive with just single site incision the mostly umbilical which was far superior to other surgical approaches. The NOS required an incision of only 5 mm and was becoming increasingly popular with doctors as well as patients now.”
NOS treatment was cosmetically preferable, particularly to younger female patients with less pain, less chance of injury to other organs, no visible scar, and faster recovery, maintained Dr Dhillon.
Talking about uterus surgery, he said that this surgery has evolved from traditional abdominal /vaginal hysterectomy to the modern day single port scar-less uterus removal. There were innumerable advantages of laparoscopic surgery including decreased post operative pain, lesser hospital stay, quicker recovery and return to normal physical activities, reduced blood loss, no large scars and less wound complications.
