Dignitaries at the two day National Workshop organised in CGC Landran.

A two-day, national level workshop on -- Optimization Techniques in Mechanical Engineering -- was organised at Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran by the department of mechanical engineering, CGC Landran in association with the Institution of Engineers (India) Punjab and Chandigarh State Centre, under the aegis of Mechanical Engineering Division Board, IEI. The entire premise of the two-day workshop was centered on the development and application of emerging trends in optimization in the field of Mechanical Engineering. The workshop was attended by 100-plus members of faculty, research scholars and industry representatives.

Dr. Ekta Singla, Head, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Ropar, was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Mr Janak Raj Garg, Chairman, Punjab and Chandigarh state Centre, the Institution of Engineers was the Guest of Honour. Dr. Tara Singh Kamal, Council Member and former Vice President, the Institution of Engineers also graced the event. The objective of the workshop was to promote translation of basic research into applied investigation and convert it into industrial practice in an efficient manner, using the best suited optimization techniques. It helped participants to understand the basics of single and multi-response optimization techniques such as Taguchi, RSM, Grey Relation Theory, ANN, Genetic Algorithms, Fuzzy Logic Models and Particle Swarm Techniques, among others.

Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Ekta Singla emphasized on the importance of selecting and using the right optimization techniques and how complex manufacturing requirements of today necessitate application of optimization techniques to manufacture more reliable and more economical products. “The workshop provides an excellent forum for sharing knowledge and results in theory, methodology and applications impacts and challenges of Mechanical Engineering,” she added.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman CGC Landran and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal, President, CGC Landran said that the workshop provided a great platform to both researchers and practitioners from the academia as well as industry to discuss and share cutting-edge development in the field and would go a long way in bridging the gap in academia and industry.
