Ludhiana, November 15, 2019: To check the pollution allegedly caused by the dyeing industries of the city, a team of National Green Tribunal (NGT) today visited the city.
The NGT team led by Justice Jasbir Singh, retired judge, Punjab & Haryana High Court, and chairman, Monitoring Committee, NGT, checked some dyeing industries as well. Members Mr SC Aggarwal, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal and Babu Ram were also present on the occasion.
After holding a meeting with officers of different departments at Circuit House, here today, and while speaking to media persons, Justice Jasbir Singh said that the main aim of today’s visit is to check the pollution caused by dyeing industries of the city. Today, the NGT team checked 4 dyeing industries and their effluent treatment plants were found to be operational. The samples of treated water were also taken, that have been sent for examination to laboratory.
He said that the state government is making efforts to treat the water through Sewerage Treatment Plants and for the upgradation and setting up of new STPs, the state government is spending around Rs 1000 crore. He informed that the tendering process is underway and the target is to start this work in March 2020 and complete it by March 2021.
He said that the NGT has made it clear to all industries that they cannot discharge even a drop of untreated water into the natural water resources and strict action would be taken against the defaulters. He also appealed to the farmers to not burn paddy straw as it causes air pollution because the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increases.
Prominent among those present on the occasion included Deputy Commissioner Mr Pradeep Kumar Agrawal, MC Commissioner Mrs Kanwal Preet Kaur Brar, PPCB Chief Engineer Mr Gulshan Rai, besides several others.
