National Geoscience Award for PU Faculty

Chandigarh, September 23, 2019: Dr.Parampreet Kaur, Associate Professor, Department of Geology, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been conferred National Geoscience Award-2018 by Honourable Minister of Mines, Pralhad Joshi in a ceremony held in New Delhi on September 19, 2019 in recognition of her significant contributions in the field of “Basic Geosciences”.
Among her most significant contributions is the discovery of about 3.55 billion years old trondhjemite gneiss from the Bundelkhand Craton, being the second oldest rock in India, and around 3.70 billion years old detrital zircon from the Aravalli orogen, Rajasthan, the oldest age reported from northern India.
Dr. Kaur has contributed significantly on unravelling the Eoarchaean-Palaeoproterozoic crustal evolution of the Aravalli-Bundelkhand block, particularly derivation of 3.55-3.20 billion year old TTG crust from chondritic mantle source highlighting the absence of evidence for depleted mantle and seeking reassessment of the extent of mantle depletion at this time on a global scale. She has also constrained the magmatic-metasomatic evolution of A-type granites, formulating a two-stage metasomatic model to develop an understanding for the specific mechanism of albitisation in granites.
