Mushroom Cultivation Training at Guru Kashi University

Talwandi Sabo, December 18, 2014: ‘Earn While You Learn’ programme was launched in 2013 with bee keeping in Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo. After its successful accomplishment now it has been extended to Mushroom cultivation and protected cultivation. 

Dr B.S Chahal, (Prof. in Horticulture) stated that practical training on Mushrooms is essential for 4th year students of Agriculture College but all the students starting from 1st to 4th year who were interested have been imparted practical training for growing at least one unit of mushrooms during winter. The media & compost was prepared from wheat bhusa and paddy straw, which was mixed with nutrients by the students themselves. The spawn (seed) was brought from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. The Button Mushroom & Dhingree (varieties) were sown during 1st fortnight of November and are now in production.

The students who have done all this work have keen interest for such type of entrepreneurship. The students have also shown interest in summer mushroom, training of which will start during March-April. They have not only been trained in production but also in harvesting, post harvesting management, packing, transportation & marketing. All this training programme will not only cover syllabi of students but will also make them earn while studying in Guru Kashi University.

Dr. N.S. Malhi, Vice Chancellor Guru Kashi University highly appreciated this programme and expressed the hope that more such programmes will came into being in future, so as to gainfully utilize the energy of youth to make them good entrepreneurs.
