Movie Review: Dedh Ishqiya

The year began with an unforgettable Mr Joe B Carvalho & nostalgic Sholay in 3D....this week's 2 offerings Yaariyan & Dedh Ishqiya are raring to give a kick start to the Bollywood's New year which came to stand still after 1st week...Do they succeed? Let's review Dedh Ishqiya...... A sequel to the critically & commercially entertaining Ishqiya (2010)....the antics of Khalujaan (Naseer Saab after disastrous outing in Jackpot) & Babban (Arshad Warsi) continue as they haven't changed their con men act.....After 1 such act, Khalu disappears ditching Babban & leaving him at the mercy of Mushtaq Bhai (Salman Shahid) [Remember Ishqiya's first scene]. Babban again escapes & comes to know that Khalu is in Mahumudabad trying his hand at winning the swaymwar of the widow Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit Nene) by participating in the Annual Mushaira over there. Also present is a suitor/Gunda in guise of a shayar Jaan Mohammed (Vijay Raaz) trying to woo Para since 3 years. Both Begum & her close confidante Muniya (Huma Qureshi) are mysterious women with a secret cloud in their activities especially Muniya's.....Babban after coming to Mahumudabad falls for Muniya & thereafter he realizes that the two women have a plan of their own.

The pre-climax reveals the plans of all & incidentally the climax which ought to be strong is unintentionally funny (with the actual reality of Para/Muniya is revealed). This one being the sequel, the comparisons with first part are inevitable. The basic premise like the first part & the lingo is rustic with a rural,semi-urban setting (Yes, there are references to I-Phone 5 & New York Burgers, but that's it) Unlike the first part, which had a lot of twists & turns, this one has only one & that too in Pre-Climax. Also the woman there Krishna (the vivacious Boombat Balan) had a lot of oomph factor which is missing here. The narrative is laden with chaste Urdu dialect & a lot of Poetry is thrown at the audience who if intelligent, can lap up the same & if not, can feel bored a lot. Also the pacing is very inconsistent, majority being towards slower side. Music is another low point, U sorely miss Dil toh Bachha hai ji & Ibn e Batuta from 1st Part. When a movie has a tagline Hornnn OK Pleeeeejjjj Pleeeejjj as its main highlight song, the lesser said about the music, the better it is. Naseeruddin Shah excels in a brilliant role (Why did he do Jackpot & also called Farhaan as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Stupid & fake, only he can answer), Arshad is the lighter highlight of the film, always brings a smile with his one-liners whenever he comes on screen (though he has a smaller part this time). Madhuri is decent, Huma has an interesting part played with gusto speaking those cuss words.......The Editing could have been sharp & the run time of 151 minutes reduced to have a larger impact. The cinematography is also bad as most of the film is in dark with limited colours available.
On the whole, Dedh Ishqiya disappointed me a great deal as it pales badly in comparison to its prequel.......The all India Critics reviews are out & the average is 3.5-4 Stars, but for me Dedh Ishqiya deserves only a little better than Dedh Stars....Go for the movie at your own peril......Disappointingly Average......2* // bollywood celebrity news, bollywood weddings, bollywood events, bollywood stars, bollywood television news, bollywood movies news, bollywood gossips,
