Ludhiana, January 29, 2017: East Bengal defeated a five goal win over hosts Minerva Football Club, to stun the home side at the Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana, today. The visitors dominated the entire 90 minutes with the help of hatritck by Wedson Anselme.
Hot favorites East Bengal started their away I- league campaign on a positive note against host Minerva FC by leading 2-0 in the halftime of the match. As expected East Bengal played an attacing game and soon bore the fruit, when in the 9th minute striker Wedson netted the first goal. Minerva defenders and goalie were having no answer to Wedson's stunning effort to put the side n the lead. Taking full advantage of the lead, East Bengal continued their strategy of pressing the home team with more attacks. On the other end, shaken by an early goal, Minerva tried to collect their scattered pieces but failed to penetrate East Bengal's defence. The home side continued to rely more on their half-line for about 15minutes after conceding the first goal but to no avail. Meanwhile, East Bengal came up with another goal when in the 40th minute unchecked half-back Plaza stamped his name on the score sheet with yet another stunning field goal.
As the first half of the match was looking good for East Bengal side, this second goal made them to play with an upper hand in the left minutes. While Minerva, desperately looking for win, will going all out to win amid their home ground.The men in blue was expected to play well after the lemon break but much to the disappointment of the local fans, the side concedded three more goals. Welton, star scorer of the first half, came back heavly on home side to score two more goals and complete his first hattrick of the tournament. The experienced East Bengal side were stick to their basics of playing an attacking game. The side got the first opportunity of the second half when a Minerva defender brought down East Bengal"s striker in the penalty area. The penalty spot was converted by Wedson in the 52nd Minute he strike again to score a hattrick. Robin Singh scored the fourth goal in the 81st minute to dishearten the home side completely. The final nail in the coffin came in the 83rd minute through Wedson.
The home side failed to open their win account in the I league to maintain bottom position with zero points. The side will now play famous Chruchill Brother on Feb 1 at the same venue.
