Holds meeting with representatives of safai karamcharis & officials

Ludhiana: Manju Diler, Member, National Commission for Safai Karamcharis, today visited the city and held a meeting with the representatives of Safai Karamcharis as well as the officials of the district administration at Bachat Bhawan, here. During the meeting, the representatives of Safai Karamcharis raised several issues related to their work, after which the Manju Diler issued instructions to the officers.
MC Commissioner Kanwal Preet Kaur Brar, ADC (General) Iqbal Singh Sandhu, MC Joint Commissioner Swati Tiwana, MC Zonal Commissioner Neeraj Jain, District Welfare Officer Rajinder Kumar, all EO’s of Nagar Council’s, besides all senior officials of district Ludhiana attended the meeting.
Manju Diler directed the Municipal Corporation Ludhiana officials to ensure that the workers get proper uniform/gum boots etc and ensure the they have working hours as per guidelines and norms. She also urged the concerned officials to extend benefits such as provident fund, health care facilities and get connected the workers with various government welfare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat so that the safai karamcharis are covered under this scheme.
She also urged the officials to organise health checkup camps for the safai karamcharis at least twice a year and other awareness camps for their welfare. She said that the commission was working with a mission to ensure upliftment of safai karamcharis across the country and it would not let anyone exploit them.
She also asked the representatives of safai karamcharis that they must come forward for their rights, especially to give education to their children. She said the authorities must provide security kits to the safai karamcharis, besides implementing the welfare schemes by the Education, Health and Social Welfare departments.
Terming regular medical examination of the safai karamcharis as their basic right due to the nature of their work, she asked Municipal Corporation officials to ensure their medical check-up twice a year. She also asked the authorities to stop exploitation of workers by contractors by providing their salaries in their bank accounts. She also asked the officials to ensure that manual scavenging is completely banned in the district.
