Ludhiana, May 18, 2016: Weather is likely to be dry during the period. During this period, maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 42-44oC and 24-27oC, respectively. The maximum relative humidity is expected to remain between 32-41% and minimum in between 15-20% during next 2-3 days. As temperature is expected to rise and dry weather is expected in coming days, farmers are advised to apply irrigation to newly planted orchard plants, vegetables etc., according to an agroadvisory bulletin released by Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana today.
It further said that it is the optimum time to sow the paddy nursery. Grow recommended varieties i.e. PR 126, PR 124, PR 123, PR 122, PR 121, PR 116, PR 114, PR 115, PR 113 etc. As dry weather is expected in coming days, farmers are advised to ensure irrigation requirement for nursery. Control weeds in the planted as well as ratoon crop. Due to prevailing hot weather conditions, sugarcane crop require frequent irrigations at 8 to 10 days interval.
In cotton crop, eradicate the weeds like kanghi buti, peeli buti, puth kanda etc. growing on fields bunds, waste lands, road side and irrigation channels/canals to avoid further spread of whitefly to cotton fields. Whitefly also attacks other alternate host crops like brinjal, potato, tomato, okra, moong, mash and guar. Regular surveillance should be done for timely management on these crops. Regular surveillance of whitefly on cotton should also be done.
Irrigate the standing vegetable crops once a week regularly. Harvest mature umbels of onion at weekly intervals. It is the optimum time for the sowing of pumpkin, Punjab Samrat variety is recommended. Downy mildew in muskmelon can appear on the growing vines. To check the disease, spray the crop with 300-600 g Indofil M-45 or kavach in 100-200 litres of water per acre at weekly interval
As temperature is rising, application of irrigation to young as well as bearing fruits such as peach, pear, plum and citrus is very important. It is the best time for pruning of ber, as trees shed their leaves and become dormant in May. To avoid the adverse effect of hot weather on fruit trees apply white-wash on the trunks of the trees if it is not done earlier. To grapes, apply irrigation at weekly intervals during this month. The young litchi plants may need irrigation twice a week.
Keep the animal at safe and cooler enclosure during the duststorm. Provide 24 hour cool and clean water.
