Ludhiana, October 18, 2012: A massive ovarian tumor weighing 5.70 kg was recently removed from a 21-years old female patient by a team of gynecologistsand anesthesiologists at DMCH.

The surgery was performed under the headship of Professor & Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology- Dr Promila Jindal

Talking about this surgical challenge, Dr Promila Jindal said the patient presented with a complaint of abdominal pain from four months only. After undergoing all the major tests and investigations, it was surprising for the doctors to find such a massive tumor in this young patient. The surgery of removing this massive tumour was more challenging, in this case, due to the fact that the patient was unmarried and preserving fertility was for a priority for both doctors and the patient.

Mucinous Epithelial Tumors, such as the one found in this patient, usually increase in size and affect only one of the ovaries. But in this patient, the tumour had involved both the ovaries thus, risking the fertility to a great extent. The tumor was found to be measuring 14”X 8 ” in the left ovary with 3”X3 ” in the right ovary and extended upto the diaphragm. After four hours of exhaustive surgery, the whole tumor was removed and patient was shifted for good post-operative care. The patient was discharged in a healthy condition after 10 days of hospitalization and hopefully, will be able to enjoy motherhood like any other women of her age.

Dr Promila Jindal suggested that Ovarian cancer is a 'silent killer' and when detected, it is already spread. Some of the generalized signs & symptoms of ovarian cysts and tumors include Pain in the abdomen, Nausea or vomiting, Loss of appetite, Malaise, Abdominal distension, Weight loss, Painful menstruation and abnormal bleeding, Difficulty in urinating or frequent need to urinate or Mild pain in the lower back If any of these symptoms are present, then one must get it checked from a qualified doctor
