Mullanpur (Ludhiana), July 12, 2016: Deputy Commissioner Mr Ravi Bhagat has informed that Ludhiana district has got yet another feather on its cap, as it stands first in the construction of toilets for needy in the state. This information has been uploaded on the website of Union Water Supply and Sanitation Department, as it mentions Ludhiana on first rank when it comes to construction of toilets for needy under the Swachh Bharat Mission. With the construction of more than 15000 toilets, Ludhiana district stands first while Moga (1135) stands last.
While addressing a function organised during the start of construction of 5000 toilets in a single day at village Rurka of the district, Deputy Commissioner Mr Ravi Bhagat informed that the report concerning all districts of Punjab has been uploaded on the website of union ministry.
He informed that as per the website, Ludhiana stands first with the construction of 11836 toilets (till date more than 15000 constructed but not yet recorded in official record), Fatehgarh Sahib (5694) stands second, followed by Patiala (5402), Sri Muktsar Sahib (5273), Ajitgarh/Mohali (4957), Bathinda (4237), Fazilka (3916), Barnala (3848), Hoshiarpur (3777), Mansa (3529), Amritsar (3482), Rupnagar (3178), Tarn Taran (3096), Pathankot (2790), Gurdaspur (2691), Kapurthala (2647), Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (2342), Jalandhar (2295), Faridkot (2233), Sangrur (1807), Ferozepur (1763) and Moga stands last with the construction of 1135 toilets for needy.
Mr Bhagat informed that by December 31, 2016, Ludhiana would become Open Defecation Free and for bringing speed to the ongoing work, the work for construction of 5000 toilets in a single day was started today. It is pertinent to mention that 162 villages of the district have already been declared Open Defecation Free.
He said that the construction of more than 5000 toilets would start in 300 villages and their construction would complete in next two months time. Out of total toilets, around 3200 would be constructed by the Water Supply and Sanitation Department and remaining by the Bharti Foundation. The DC informed that there are a total of 928 villages in Ludhiana district, out of which 162 have already been declared Open Defecation Free and 14383 toilets have been constructed in 651 villages.
While addressing the function, MLA Mr Manpreet Singh Ayali appreciated the efforts of District Administration in this regard and thanked for choosing village Rurka for the start of construction work of 5000 toilets in a single day. He urged the gram panchayat's and NGOs to assist the district administration in this work.
Executive Engineer (XEN) of Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Mr Jaswinder Singh Chahal informed that under this project, they would not only construct toilets, but would also educate the masses about the ill effects of Open Defecation. For making people aware, village level committees have been formed along with vigilance committees.
