Ludhiana News/Children’s Day Celebrated at CMCH

Ludhiana, November 15, 2013: Children’s Day reminds us of the importance of children in our society as citizens of tomorrow. Marking the birthday of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru ‘Children’s Day was celebrated at Paediatric OPD of CMC & Hospital Ludhiana by College of Nursing on the theme “Right Nutrition for Right Play”.

Prof. Veena Barkat, HOD Child Health (Paediatric) Nursing unveiled the theme. Dr. Nandini Bedi , Associate professor, Paediatric Surgery department graced the occasion as the chief guest and unfolded a booklet for parents regarding nutrition and play.

Students of M.Sc Nursing (Child Health Nursing) organized an exhibition on the theme. Students of B.Sc and GNM 3rd year participated in the exhibition by preparing toys, clothes and posters according to the different age groups i.e from Newborns to Adolescents. Handmade toys were a great attraction among the children. Activities such as role play, action songs, quiz competition for mothers and painting competition for children were conducted. Sweets, toys and various goodies were distributed among children to make this day memorable.

World diabetes day – 2013 “protect our future”

 14th November is observed and celebrated as the World Diabetes Day, every year. On this day, many years ago, the Discoverer of Insulin Dr. Fredrick Banting was born; so this day is observed by the Health Care Professionals as a homage to this great scientist and also to emphasize on the importance of ‘Education’ and ‘Prevention’ aspects of Diabetes.  Christian Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana, Punjab has been observing this day since past many years with the vision of creating awareness among the masses especially under the leadership of Department of Medicine and Nursing College. This year the Medical Surgical Nursing Department of College of Nursing, CMC & Hospital took the lead and MSc, BSc and Diploma nursing students organized a fabulous programme in the Medical O.P.D. of the hospital. Student Nurses presented an invocation song and an educative skit related to the theme.

Dr. Mary John, Head of Medicine Dept., CMC & Hospital, emphasized on the importance of primary prevention and treatment in order to control the endemic of Diabetes in India which is known as the World Capital of Diabetes. Ruma Singh, Prof. Renuka Chauhan, Ritu P. Naihar, Asst. Prof. and Sapna D. Malviya, Asst. Prof. in College of Nursing also spoke on various aspects of this chronic and dangerous metabolic disease.

Audience were overwhelmed by the statistics i.e. 40.9 Million people have Diabetes in India alone followed by 39.8 Million in China and 19.2 Million in U.S. The death rate due to diabetes & its complications is increasing at an alarming rate. The 2025 predictive study shows that if not controlled, Indians will comprise of 80% of all diabetics all over the world.

Patients their relative, CMC staff & employers and students found the programme very interesting and educative & appreciated the hard work put in by the teachers along with five MSc First Year students – Mizrab Choudhary, Litty R. Samuel, Harneetpal Kaur, Babita Rani and Jobanpreet Kaur; in the form of poster exhibition (by BSc IInd Year students), demonstration of Foot Care, free Blood Sugar tests and on going Health Education. Most of the staff and students vowed to participate in controlling Diabetes and Protecting their Future!!
