LUDHIANA HEART SURGEON CONFERRED FELLOWSHIP BY PUNJAB ACADEMY OF SCIENCES AT THE 21st PUNJAB SCIENCE CONGRESS HELD IN PAU

Ludhiana, February 8, 2018: Dr.Harinder Singh Bedi, Chairman Cardiac Sciences at Ludhiana Mediways Hospital, was conferred Honorary Fellowship of the Punjab Academy of Sciences (PAS) at the inaugural function of the 21st Punjab Science Congress held at Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana on 7th February 2018. The executive committee of the Academy conferred this fellowship on Dr.Bedi for his immense contribution in the field of Medical Science specifically for bringing International level Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Surgery to the people of Punjab. Dr Ramesh Chand, Member NITI Aayog, Government of India was the chief guest on this occasion and Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon; Vice-Chancellor PAU presided over the Punjab Science Congress.

PAU has organized the Science Congress under the aegis of Punjab Academy of Sciences (PAS), Patiala. Dr. Jagtar Singh, Secretary of Punjab Academy of Sciences, Patiala said, “The Academy was established in 1997 to promote science and technology in Punjab and to project the contribution of Punjab scientists at the national and international level. Punjab Science Congress, which is held every year under the auspices of this academy, provides a common platform to scientists from different fields to interact with each other. At this annual event, distinguished scientists from India and abroad, who have contributed significantly to research and development in various scientific fields, are awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Academy.”

Dr. Jagtar Singh stated, “Dr. H.S. Bedi was chosen for Fellowship of the Academy because of his outstanding contribution in the field of Cardio- Vascular Sciences; Innovations and some of the World’s First Surgeries. He was the first person to start Open Heart Surgery in the private sector in Punjab.” He added, “Dr. Bedi has performed more than 17000 Open Heart Surgical Procedures so far with results matching International Standards and has mentored many budding surgeons. He performed the first series of multi-vessel beating heart surgeries in the world (acknowledged by the medical world and published in the Limca Book of World Records’ 2000). Dr. H.S. Bedi also performed the world’s first Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery using a Cath lab in the OT (Limca Book of World Records’ 2008). He has over 50 International publications to his credit including 15 Chapters in the Book ‘Myocardial Protection’ published by Blackwell Publishing, New York in Jan’ 2004.”

Other distinguished scientists, who were conferred the Fellowship of Punjab Academy Sciences, are Dr. Ashwani Kumar (Entomology), Dr. Inderjit Singh (Environmental Sciences), Dr. Sanjeev Puri (Bio-Chemical Sciences) and Dr. Yadvinder Singh (Agricultural Sciences).

Dr (Mrs) G.K. Sangha, Dean College of Basic Sciences & Humanities PAU and Convener of the Organizing Committee of the 21st Punjab Science Congress hosted by PAU welcomed all the dignitaries. Dr. Shammi Kapoor (Professor & Head Department of Microbiology) and Organizing Secretary of the Congress gave the vote of thanks. Dr S.S. Hundal, Head of the Zoology Department and Member of the organizing committee, conducted the programme.
