Ludhiana district leads state in providing employment under MGNREGA scheme

Ludhiana, July 17, 2016: The Ludhiana district has topped the state in providing employment to people under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). During the last three months time, more than 8 lakh days of employment was provided to people of Ludhiana district, for which more than Rs 28.5 crore has been spent for this purpose, which is the highest amongst all other districts of Punjab.
While providing information, Deputy Commissioner Mr Ravi Bhagat informed that as per the quarterly report issued by the Union Rural Development Ministry, the Ludhiana district provided 8,21,584 days of employment to people in last three months time, which is much more than other districts of the state. He informed that out of total days of employment, 6,96,215 days of employment was provided to people from scheduled castes and 1,25,369 days of employment to people from other castes. Out of 8,21,584 days of employment, 5,99,314 days of employment was provided to women, which is a big step towards women empowerment. Job cards were provided to 96,908 households, out of which 77859 cards were made for houses owned by scheduled castes.
ADC (D) Miss Apneet Riyait informed that under this scheme, an amount of Rs 28 crore 45 lakh and 98 thousand have been spent in last three months, whereas an amount of Rs 250 crore 46 lakh and 87 thousand has been spent in the state. She informed that workforce under MGNREGA has been involved in cleaning of village ponds, cleaning of irrigation channels, rural roads, plantation of trees, agriculture and other development works.
Mr Ravi Bhagat informed that the District Administration is committed for providing maximum benefits to beneficiaries of all government welfare schemes and make sure no eligible beneficiary is left.
