Ludhiana, December 8, 2014: Multitude varieties and vivid hues of chrysanthemums captivated the onlookers as two-day “Chrysanthemum Show” began at the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) today. The Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, and the Estate Organisation of PAU have jointly organised the show at the research farm of floriculture department. The show presented a rich feast to the eyes of the flower enthusiasts, who turned up in large number to have the glimpses of blooming chrysanthemums. Besides, a delegation comprising Professors and students from the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), Bangalore also visited the show.
Inaugurating the show, the Chief Guest Dr Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU said that the University Chrysanthemum Show holds its uniqueness till date. “PAU has displayed 200 varieties of Chrysanthemum, out of which 17 varieties have been released by the University for diverse purposes such as loose flower, cut flower, pot culture and garden decoration,” he said. In addition, four hybrids/varieties are in pipeline, he disclosed. Lauding the efforts of floriculture experts, Dr Dhillon said that PAU aims to promote flower cultivation by providing general knowledge to the farmers as well as public through various extension modes.
Dr Avtar Singh Dhindsa, ex-member, Board of Management, PAU and a flower grower was the guest of honour. He said, “For refreshing the mind, public should grow distinctive varieties of flowers at homes, schools, colleges or any other premises.” Beautiful surroundings provide solace, harmony and peace in life, he added.
Dr Premjit Singh, Head, Department of Floriculture and Landscaping, disclosed that more than 5000 pots of different varieties of chrysanthemum belonging to different classes have been exhibited. This time, the University has introduced four new varieties namely Bidhan Malika, Bidhan Madhuri, Pusa Adity and Pusa Centenary, which are being evaluated and will be utilised in breeding programme, he added. Dr Singh said that PAU also has fragrant varieties like Mother Teresa and Yellow Charm in its kitty.
Leading the delegation, Dr K.M. Harinikumar, Department of Plant Biotechnology, UAS, Bangalore highly appreciated the new varieties and new colours of chrysanthemum flowers.
