Jalandhar, July 31, 2014: Lieutenant General Narinder Pal Singh Hira, has taken over command of the elite Vajra Corps, here  today. The General Officer has also taken over as Colonel of the  Sikh Light Infantry Regiment from General Bikram Singh the former  Chief of Army Staff.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA) Khadakvasala the Lt General Hira was commissioned in the SIKH Light Infantry Regiment on 16th December 1978. The General Officer has a rich experience of conventional operations both in Western and Eastern Theatres, and also of Counter-Insurgency, both in J&K and in the North East. He has had a distinguished career spanning various Command, Staff and Instructional appointments. He successfully commanded his Infantry Battalion in active Counter-Insurgency operations in Operation RHINO in Assam. The General officer later commanded prestigious Infantry Brigade and Infantry Division on the Line of Control in the J&K with distinction. The General Officer has had the unique distinction of having led operations where officers and men under his direct command were awarded Ashok Chakra, Kirti Chakra, Shaurya Chakras, Sena Medals and a large number of other gallantry awards.
Lt General Hira has done all prestigious Tri Services professional courses to include Defence Services Staff College, Higher Command Course and National Defence College course.  Lieutenant General NPS Hira has replaced Lieutenant General Ashwini Kumar Bakshi,  who has retired as General Officer Commanding of Vajra Corps from the Indian Army on  31 Jul 14.
