Jalandhar, February 11, 2016: Lovely Professional University sportswomen have won All India Inter University Softball (W) Championship 2015-16 by defeating strong contenders in league matches- Guru Nanak Dev University Amritsar & Punjabi University Patiala and drawn another match with Punjab University Chandigarh. LPU topped the league with 5 points by winning 2 matches with 2 scores each and a draw for one score. Punjab University Chandigarh got second position with 3 points; and, GNDU Amritsar & Punjabi University Patiala remained third with 2 Points each. Chief Guest of the Final Day of Championship, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal handed over the glittering trophy to Championship winners. Pro Chancellor Mrs Rashmi Mittal, General Secretary Punjab Softball Federation Mr PN Passi and National Umpire from Maharashtra Mr Mukul Deshpandey were also present.
This year, championship was held at LPU Campus, where 65 universities from all across India participated aiming to grab the coveted trophy. LPU players exhibited finest softball skills during knockout- rounds also and gathered applaud from spectators and all players of other universities, even from their final league matches’ competitors. Each of the LPU team members was also honoured with gold Medal of the tournament. All India Inter University Softball (Men) Championship has also been inaugurated today to last up to 16th February 2016. 75 universities from all across India are participating to lift the final trophy.
Congratulating the winner team, LPU Chancellor Mr Ashok Mittal said: “We are happy to note that our women players have once again brought top title for themselves and their university. It is worth mentioning that many of them belong to hard engineering/ management programs rather than physical education only. I advise all the soft-ball team members to keep up this winning spirit for future participations as well.” LPU international softball player Madhavi Sharma assured all sports lovers to even bring Olympic Gold Medal in this category of the sports on getting an opportunity.
After exciting opening rounds of different games, the pace to grab the top prize and to assess the continuous agility of LPU women- players was worth witnessing. LPU Pitcher Poonam Dogra, Catcher Happy and Batter Madhavi Sharma excelled all other players in expressing the perfect softball skills. Only due to their unique quality and true team spirit of other players of Short Stop, First Base, Second Base, Center Out, Third Base, Right Out, Left Out, and Right Out places, LPU women jointly led the way in a ‘struggle’ to win the national title. Despite the form and credentials of both the LPU and PU Chandigarh teams, the final league matches of the championship turned out lop-sided in place of being hot contest. LPU players positioned for proven playing skills and did not allow the opponents to have a win over them.
