Lecture on “Guru Nanak’s Philosophy and Environment at PU
Chandigarh, February 8, 2019: Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special lecture on “Guru Nanak’s Philosophy and Environment” here today to commemorate 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. While speaking on the occasion, Padamshri Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, a known Environmentalist and member of Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) recited Bani to say that environment has a double role to play. Nature cleans the environment and protects the man, he said. He further added that environment gives a breathing space to the individuals to live in nature and protect the mankind. He asserted that environment is the motivation for mankind to live in peace and harmony. Baba ji quoted from Gurubani, “Pawan Guru, Pani Pita, Mata Dharti Maa”. He elaborated that Guru Ji sang hymns in praise of each component of nature, Air, Water, Earth, Seasons etc. He remarked that now a days, we are polluting everything including rivers and now rivers have become Ganda Nala and water bodies as Ghaghar River became extinct. He exhorted the audience to protect environment with all their might. He said that there is enough for everyone’s need but not for greed. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, P.U addressed participants that in his address said that Guru Nank Dev Ji was a great teacher, a philosopher, a social reformer who has sung the praises of nature and motivated us all for the protection of environment. PU VC said that the PU will celebrate 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji throughout the year in a befitting manner. Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University while speaking on the occasion said Environment is not only Air, Water, Earth but also the human beings who live on the earth. He said that the Environment can be saved by the changing in thinking and attitudes towards the Environment to make it clean. Dr. Paramjit Singh Kang, Chairperson on behalf of the department assured Vice Chancellor that his department will continue to work on the issue, Environment and Nature and organize more of such programs for the students and the community particularly in Panjab University Hostels. More than 70 university students, research scholars and teachers participated.
