Ludhiana, November 28, 2016: The project “Environmentally Sound Management of Medical Waste in India” was launched today in DMCH jointly by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)and Punjab Pollution Control Board. Mr.Phlippe R.Scholtes, Managing Director, UNIDO from Austria was the chief guest, who launched the model district of the project today in DMCH. Other Important dignitaries participated in the launch include Sh.Manpreet Singh (Chairman, PPCB), Dr.Babu Ram (MS cum Nodal Officer, PPCB), Er Gulshan Rai (Chief Environmental Engineer, PPCB, Ludhiana). Ms.Erlinda Galvan (Project Manager, UNIDO), Dr.SP Dhua (Regional Coordinator, UNIDO), Sh Sonu Singh (Joint Director, MoEFCC), Ms.Shradha Gupta (Asstt. Project Coordinator), Dr. Rajoo Singh Chhina (Dean, DMCH cum State Technical Advisor) and Sh Prem Gupta, Secretary of DMCH Managing Society. Representatives of 28 model hospital were also present during the launching programm
According to Dr Rajoo Singh (Dean Academics & State Techanical Advisor), the launching of model jointly by UNIDO and Punjab Pollution Control Board will promote management of biomedical waste in a manner that reduces adverse environmental impacts and protects human health The ultimate aim of the project is to reduce and eliminate the releases of harmful pollutants into the environment. The project is being implemented in 5 States of India I.e Punjab, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Gujarat and odisha. Under the project, 28 hospital of each state and 1 common treatment facility will be developed into model for other hospitals.
Dr Chhina further informed that Ludhiana district is identified as Model District which has to be established in the state of Punjab. The model districts, which will be established by UNIDO and Punjab Pollution Control Board will have state-of-art integrated system of medical waste management with modern infrastructure, complete tracking of waste movement, trained manpower and stringent implementation of regulatory framework.
M.S. Ramaiah Medical College, Banglore will be coordinating training and capacity building of the health care personnel in all the five states with UNIDO, Government of India and State Govt.
