Ludhiana, July 26, 2016: PAU, Vice Chancellor, Dr.B.S.Dhillon, on Monday, inaugurated the ICAR funded office-cum-lab building of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mansa at village Khokhar Khurd about 7 kms from district headquarters. The prime mandates of this centre are to conduct on-farm trials for identifying technologies in terms of location specific sustainable land-use systems, to impart trainings to extension functionaries within the area of operation , to organize short-and long-term vocational training courses in agriculture and allied vocations for the rural youth and farmers with an emphasis on "learning by doing" to generate self-employment through institutional financing. This centre also organizes on-and off-campus training courses, conduct front-line demonstrations of various crops to generate production data, and feedback information.

While addressing the farmers and PAU staff, Dr. Dhillon laid emphasis on continuous monitoring of cotton crop for assessing infestation of whitefly in cotton belt of Punjab, so that necessary control measures can be initiated in time. He also addressed issues regarding rapidly declining underground water table and sustainability of rice-wheat cropping system in Punjab. Dr. Dhillon emphasized on the adoption of short-duration rice varieties and technologies recommended by the university for higher productivity and water saving. Dr. R.K. Gumber, Director of Research advised the farming community to adopt various crop production technologies recommended by the University to enhance their income. Dr. R.S. Sidhu, Director of Extension Education, PAU, emphasized on the use of various services rendered by Krishi Vigyan Kendras in the interest of farming community. He also suggested that the farmers must obtain vocational training from Krishi Vigyan Kendras, so that the subsidiary occupations may be made more remunerative
