Jalandhar, February 11, 2015: Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar’s Women Studies Centre organised an open House on Issues Related to Women.

The motive behind this interactive session, in the words of Prof.Dr. Atima Sharma Dwivedi, Principal KMV was to provide students a platform to share their thoughts and problems with others.  This would help them to overcome their inhibitions and fears.  This in turn, will help them to evolve into empowered and emancipated women, which is the mission of KMV-the 128 year old glorious institution.  At times girls don’t discuss issues related to harassment & gender bias at home so the students were given an apt forum to an their views.  This interactive session witnessed the overwhelming participation by the KMVites.  Issues like:  Are women safe in India?   Who is responsible for their plight?  Are women treated as men’s equal?  Does how a woman dress gives licence to men to accost them with indecency ?  Why are certain arenas left unexplored by women?  Why don’t women excel in sports like cricket etc.?

Much pertinent questions were raised by the young girls and satisfactory answers to these were sought.  Prof. Dr. Atima Sharma averred that it is high time now that the mindsets of people should be changed.  Men & Women implement each other and so the whole society should take concrete steps to bring about this change.  Women have to dispel the three fold misconception as stated below to command a well behoving position in the society: 1) Daughters won’t support the parents; 2) Daughters will demand dowry; and 3) Daughters will not take forth their family name & legacy.

She maintained that the change is apparent but not all encompassing empowerment of girls will come from within Education and knowledge can help bring about empowerment but girls need to inculcate this empowerment within themselves.

Dr. Madhumeet, Dean Student Welfare opined that girls must win the confidence of their parents by always confiding in them and do deeds which bring pride to their parents.  Dr. Amarpreet Khurana, Director, Women Studies Centre, requested all present to take a pledge to never indulge in female foeticide.  Dr. Vinod Kalra, Head Department of Hindi maintained that women are the getting factor in the whole  universe and so should be honoured and revered.  Mahima Sharma, (BBA Sem.-IV), Sakshi (BCA), Kanchan Verma, (M.Com-IV Sem), Navreet (B.Com Sem-VI), Kirti (B.Com (Prof.) Sem VI), Sheenam (B.Com), Sunil (B.Sc Biotech), Manjot, Harjot Kaur, Vani (M.Com Sem-IV), Vibhuti, Simran (Hons. School in English Sem-II) and many more KMVites expressed their views on women related issued including eve-teasing, harassment on roads, police highhandedness, role of education and economic independence.  This activity proved very fruitful for the audience.
