Ludhiana, August 3, 2017: Sukhpal Singh Khaira, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly has written an open letter to Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh regarding the proposed dharna on NH-1 at V.Ramidi, district Kapurthala on 6th August.
The letter reads as under: "As you are aware, the NHAI is constructing 6 lane road from Jalandhar to Amritsar. The residents of villages Ramidi, Dogranwal and Hambowal/Randhawa had approached me for construction of underpasses at the intersections of the said villages. I wrote many representations to the Hon’ble Road and Surface Transport Minister Govt. of India, the Chairman NHAI, Sh.Vijay Sampla Social Welfare Minister Govt. of India and MP Hoshiarpur and Secretary PWD B&R Punjab (copies of representations attached). Despite my repeated representations and telephonic conversations with Secretary PWD and Deputy Commissioner Kapurthala, the NHAI is refusing to provide underpasses at the said intersections.
The case of an underpass at V., Ramidi intersection is extremely important as the agricultural land of village is divided on both sides of NH-1. The purchase centre is across the NH-1 from village Ramidi, a large part of the population is settled on both sides of NH-1, cremation ground is also situated on the other side of NH-1, bank and school are also divided. More details are available in the representations to the Hon’ble Ministers GOI.
I have now been conveyed that NHAI has refused to create underpasses at not only Ramidi but also at the other above stated villages. Being the elected representative of 26 – Bholath assembly constituency, I am left with no decent option but to sit on a “Dharna” on 6th August 2017 11 AM onwards on the NH-1. I know there would be lot of inconvenience to the commuters that day, for which the state government and district administration of Kapurthala will be responsible because I have tried my best to explore all legitimate ways to get the said underpasses constructed.
Therefore, I urge you to intervene so that unnecessary harassment to the commuters can be saved and justice be meted out to the residents of the said villages demanding justified underpasses."
