Jalandhar, July 14, 2018: Sh.Manoranjan Kalia, Former Minister, Punjab said that if the claim of Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is true that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has broken the backbone of drug menace within 4 weeks of coming to power as per the oath of Gutka Sahib taken as the then President PPCC, why are their own partymen are crying that Congress Government has failed to tackle the drug menace.
In a statement here today, he added there has been 20 % increase in the use of “chitta” in Punjab in 2017 alone as compared to previous year as per the study conducted by AIIMS. There has been acquittal of more than 900 accused in drug cases under NDPS Act in past 6 months in Punjab from January to June 2018. The reason of acquittals is that the investigation has been done by ad-hoc investigating officers whereas it is mandatory under NDPS Act that investigating officers must be regular one. But no action has been taken by the Capt government against the police officers who appointed ad-hoc investigating officers in the cases under NDPS Act. There has been an average of death-a-day due to drugs for the past 2 months as officially reported the cause of deaths in the postmortem between age group 17 to 35 at civil hospitals.
“Thus, the number of drug related deaths are much more as in most cases the cause of death is not reported truthfully by the families due to social taboo”, said Kalia.
