Chandigarh, September 20, 2016: Sh.Anil Joshi, Local Government Minister, Punjab has congratulated the people of the holy city of Amritsar and Jalandhar for the cities being included in the smart city list.
Government of India launched Smart Cities Mission in June, 2015 to develop 100 Smart Cities to give decent quality of life to its citizens, a clean and sustainable environment and application of smart solution.
After evaluating the proposals of these cities, Government of India today announced the result of additional 27 cities to be included for development under the Smart Cities Mission in which Amritsar has got the 1st rank, whereas Jalandhar city has got the 19th rank. Earlier Ludhiana city had been included in the first phase.
As per Government of India guideline, a Special Purpose Vehicle i.e a company registered under the Companies Act shall be established in these cities, which shall carry out the implementation of the Smart City Proposal. Mobility & traffic improvement, smart surveillance, street Lighting LED with Solar panel, intelligent traffic management system, footpaths and BRTS, Sanitation and Solid Waste Management, E-Governance, Central Command and Control Centre, City wide WiFi, GIS mapping, ICT application., 24x7 Water/Electricity Supply, Storm Water Drainage , Re-development of public amenities etc. will get a boost under this project. The total plan outlay for Amritsar city is Rs. 3520 cr. and
for Jalandhar city it is Rs. 3431 cr.
The smart city mission will be operated as a Centrally sponsored scheme and Central Government shall give financial support of Rs. 500 cr. for the period of 5 years. An equal amount will be contributed by the State Government.
Sh. Joshi has thanked Union Ministers Sh. Venkaiah Naidu and Sh. Arun Jaitley for their efforts in getting these cities included in the second phase and has expressed the hope that with these initiatives at the level of the Centre Govt, the infrastructure developments in these cities will get a facelift and the people could enjoy better civic amenities. Sh. Joshi appealed to the people of the state to cooperate in the Swachh Bharat mission and keep their places and surroundings clean and green.
