Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become weak and more likely to break. Both spine and hip fractures lead to higher death rates. It has also been termed as the “Silent Thief”.  Bone mass continues to increase till about 25 years of age and then in next 25 years it usually stays stable. In third quarter of life ageing of bones sets in and bones become osteoporotic and fragile. This process can be slowed down with modern diagnostic and treatment strategies, and fractures can be prevented. This could go a long way in improving the quality of life of our senior citizens.

Dr N K Aggarwal, Chief Consultant Joint & Spine center said “Osteoporosis is responsible for nearly two million broken bones every year, but continues to be ignored by the public as well as by the doctors. We have proven, cost-effective solutions available, that can help identify those at-risk for osteoporosis and protect them from the continuous cycle of broken bones.”
Around the world, one in three women and one in five men are at risk of an osteroporotic fracture and the most common being occurence of fractures at the hip, spine and wrist.
Sharing a perspective on osteroporosis and its prevention, Dr N K Aggarwal said that considered to be the second major problem next only to cardiovascular disease as a global health care problem, it increased the susceptibility to fracture, reflected only in a low bone density, till a fracture occurred.
Most of the times people may not know that they have osteoporosis until their bones become so weak that a suden strain, bump, or fall can cause a hip to fracture or a vertebra to collapse.  A balanced and healthy diet, adequate exposure to sunlight along with lot of physical activity during the preteen and teen years is the only way that increase bone mass and greatly reduce the risk of osteoporosis in later years of life.
