John XXIII and John Paul II declared saints

Vatican City, April 27 (IANS) Popes John XXIII and John Paul II were canonised by Pope Francis Sunday in Vatican City, the country's official news network News.VA said.

A huge crowd gathered in St. Peter's Square and surrounding vantage points to see a historic ceremony.

Pope Francis read the formal proclamation at a canonisation mass which was also attended by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Francis' predecessor.
