International Convention on Youth Concerns and Challenges at KMV Concludes

Jalandhar, March 26, 2016: The second day of the two-day International Convention on Youth Concerns and Challenges organised by Kanya Maha Vidyalaya, Jalandhar witnessed the presence of eminent dignitaries and erudite speakers from different parts of the India.
The proceedings of the day took off with a plenary session steered by Prof.John Battaglino, Dean , Students , Boston University, Boston, USA). The first invited talk was delivered was Dr. Shruti Chabbra, Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University, USA on “Building Youth Capacity to Aspire”. In her talk, Dr. Chabbra said that words such as ‘youth’, ‘development’, ‘globalization’, and ‘technology’ conjure up images of progress and hope connote different things to different people. These differences can be understood in terms of the ‘Capacity to Aspire’. This capacity is both an individual as well as a collective capacity, in that it creates maps of possibilities that are available and that matter, and shapes individual desires and wants. Dr. Yanos Gordon Gyori, Associate Prof. Centre for Intercultural Psychology and Education, Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary, in his invited talk on “Methods in Educational Support for the Gifted Young to Reach their Highest Potential Levels” said that somebody is gifted if one is potentially able to reach an achievement on an exceptionally high level in a field which is socially valued. He said that proper educational methods can be a huge advantage to the gifted individuals themselves and to their societies as well. Dr. Koh Kheng Lian (Emeritus Prof., Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore, Singapore) in her invited talk on “Cultural Diversity and Hybridity : Forging on ASEAN Identity through the Mechanism of Culture” said that in a world of globalization, many youths go abroad to study and work. There is a danger that they may fall away from their such culture, so it is important to keep the ASEAN youths connected to their cultural roots. Dr. Jyoti Grewal, Dean, University College, Zayed University, Dubai, UAE, in her invited talk on “Building a Future: Promises, Potential and Possibilities” said that keeping in mind the opportunities and challenges that globalization has created, it is important to address the ways in which young women and men can harness their energies to line ‘the good life’. After the plenary session, Youth Forum was organised where the panelists were Dr. Dinesh Sharma, Channel Head, Zee PHH, Prof. John Battaglino, Dean Students, Boston University, USA, Dr. Jyoti Grewal, Dean, University College, Zayed University, Dubai, UAE and Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi, Principal, KMV Jalandhar. The young participants asked questions related to the problems and challenges being faced by the youth, the drawbacks in the present education system and the need for change in the present curriculum, the influence of media on youth, their attraction for the world of glamour and materialism, generation gap, the significance of moral values for youth etc. The questions of the young participants were very well answered by the learned panelists.
In the technical sessions of this two-day convention, 300+ research papers were presented.
The Valedictory Function witnessed the presence of luminaries and dignitaries from diverse fields. AT the outset of the function, the report of the convention was presented by Dr. Jatinder Pal, Organising Secretary of the convention. Patron’s Resolution and welcome address was delivered by Prof. Atima Sharma Dwivedi, Principal, KMV Jalandhar. Madam Principal said that there is a grave need to address the problems and grievances of the youth. Prof. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Registrar, G.N.D.U., Amritsar was the Guest of Honour. He was highly appreciative of the theme of the convention. Prof. Yanos Gordon Gyori, Asso. Prof. Centre for Intercultural Psychology and Education, Eotvos Lorand University, Budapest, Hungary was the Guest of Honour. He congratulated the KMV family for the wonderful organization of the convention. He said that for a brighter future we need strong women. Prof. John Battaglino, Dean, Students, Boston University, USA was quite appreciative of the theme of the convention and he said that there is a need to create space for youth.
The Valedictory Speech was delivered by Lt. Gen. J.S. Cheema VSM 11 Core Commander HQ II Corps. He said that the youth is a bundle of unharnessed energy and this energy needs to be channelized in the right direction. The youth should not be disconnected from their roots and moral values. He said that the development of youth is a collective responsibility of society, educational institutions and the youth themselves.
Mr. Alok Sondhi, General Secretary , Arya Shiksha Manadal extended a formal vote of thanks.
