Inter beat Lazio in Italian Serie A

Milan, May 11 (IANS) Inter Milan beat Lazio 4-1 in club veteran Javier Zanetti's farewell match at the San Siro while Verona's European dream suffered a heavy blow with a 2-2 draw home with Udinese.

Zanetti, the most decorated player in Inter's history as well as Argentina's most-capped player with 145 appearances, was the focal point of the crucial match Saturday where both Inter and Lazio needed a win in their respective chase for next season's Europa League spot, reports Xinhua.

Inter are now ranked fifth with 60 points and need only a draw in their final game of the season against Chievo away to make sure of a Europa spot for next season, while the defeat ended Lazio's hopes of a top six finish.

Verona's chance of finishing among the top six took a major blow after they surrendered a two-goal lead to draw with Udinese.

Luca Toni netted his 20th Serie A goal of the season from the penalty spot in the 14th minute before Emil Halfredsson scored eight minutes into the second period to double the hosts' lead.

Antonio Di Natale volleyed in a wonder strike on 56 minutes to inspire Udinese's fightback, which was completed by Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu's goal in the second half stoppage time.

Verona, who are eighth at the Serie A table with 54 points, now require a draw between Torino and Parma Sunday night to keep their top six hopes alive.
