Chandigarh, November 16, 2012: Rajiv Gandhi Scheme for empowerment of adolescent girls implements in six districts of the Punjab aiming at the upliftment the health status of children.

Disclosing this here today, Madan Mohan Mittal, Social Security, Women and Child Development, Health and Family Welfare Minister Punjab said that an amount of Rs. 16 crore had been allocated for the financial  year 2012-13.

The scheme had been formed by merging Kishori Shakti Yojna and nutrition programme for adolescent girls.

This scheme is being started in 6 districts of Punjab as a pilot project. Under this scheme government would provide nutrition to the girls at the age of 11-18 years and to uplift the social and economic status. "Kishori Shakti Yojna" would be implemented as before in remaining in 14 districts of the state.

There are two components of the scheme, the first component relates to provide training to the adolescent girls and the expenditure would be 100% met by the Government of India. An amount of Rs. 205.20 lakh has been released for the current financial year.

The second component under the scheme relates to Nutrition to adolescent girls and the expenditure would be met in the ratio of 50:50 between centre and state government. Rs. 1,600 lakh  had been released for the current financial year under the scheme.
