Consolidation of Higher Technical Education and quality improvement is main agenda: Spokesperson
Jalandhar, June 3, 2017: To give a boost to Technical Education of high quality, I. K. Gujral Punjab Technical University has decided to align all its courses as per the guidelines of UGC/AICTE. The University has decided to put in 'no admission zone' for the current year certain courses which do not meet the requisite latest guidelines of the Apex academic regulatory bodies. Inline with modern day requirement of the job market, University has decided to start new Courses like B. Urban Planning, MSc. Food Sciences & Technology at its main campus. The decisions have been taken after detailed deliberations by members of academic council in its recent meeting.

A spokesman of the IKGPTU clarified that the academic council in its meeting last week, had setup a committee consisting of Vice Chancellor of a Himachal University, Professor of NIT and a Director of Management Institute with a view to ascertain the courses which are running against the latest guidelines of UGC/AICTE. This Committee presented its recommendations that since the university is not running PG programme in humanities (English, Punjabi & Human Values), therefore it cannot continue with the PhD in these subjects as per latest UGC Guidelines. On M.Tech (holistic development) committee recommended that course is not as per the approved valid nomenclature of AICTE/UGC, so university should first take approval of this course as, otherwise degrees given by University shall not be recognized by UGC, thereby putting the students' future in jeopardy. Committee also gave its recommendation on PG Diploma in Human values which was started for preparing the teachers to teach in the constituent colleges of PTU. The Committee observed that as per the latest guidelines of UGC a teacher must possess PG degree in respective discipline with 55% marks with UGC NET. Therefore, the students who qualify this diploma after graduation shall not be eligible to teach in affiliated institutions and hence the students shall be left in a lurch after completion of this Diploma.

Spokesman further said that University has committed itself to improve the quality of Higher Technical Education in consonance with the policy of the state government with a view to substantially improve the employability of Punjab youth. In this regard Sh. Charanjit Singh Channi, Technical Education Minister, Punjab has asked University on his visit to the campus the other day that no compromise should be made on the quality of education in the state and the curriculum of the University should be aligned with IIT Ropar.
