IDPD: Stop issuing arms licenses to civilians

Ludhiana, December 11, 2012: The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has expressed concern at the rising violence leading to death of many innocent people.

In a joint statement here today, Dr. LS Chawla, President, Dr. Arun Mitra, General Secretary and Dr. MK Mahajan, Member, Central Council, said the use of arms has become a fashion at several marriage functions.

“Worldwide experience has shown that arms in the hands of civilians have led to increase in violence in the society and insecurity among the people”, they said, adding these arms are used for ugly show of muscle power.

They said it is the duty of security forces to provide community security to the people, adding recent trend of hiring personal security by the rich and unwanted security personnel with the so called VIPs have only increased fear among the ordinary citizens.

They have demanded that the government should stop issuing arms licenses to the civilians and arms should be issued only to the security personnel.
