Ludhiana, March 31, 2016: The Indian Doctors for Peace and Development (IDPD) has expressed skepticism on the three member high powered committee formed by the government to go into the details of overhauling the MCI. In a statement released here today the IDPD has cautioned that none of the three members is from the medical education. Dr L S Chawla, Former President of IDPD (Presently Patron) and former Chairman of the PG Committee of the MCI said that such a committee should have medical educationists of eminence as Chairperson and members. The committee in its present form with no doctor in it will not be of any use but could be counter productive.

Dr S S Soodan - President IDPD said that the Standing Committee of Parliament has pointed out on problem in the MCI and has suggested revamping of the MCI. But the way three members committee has been formed, there is serious doubt that the total exercise will end up favouring the corporate sector.

Dr Shakeel Ur Rahman – General Secretary IDPD said that it is a matter of great concern that the medical education in our country is in shambles right from the admission process. The quality of education in several medical colleges is highly compromised. One of the major reasons for this is the ghost faculty and ghost patients because of which the students are not exposed to the clinical material and get inadequate teaching. Even though these points are well known to the medical council of India but they are ignored. In fact in the last few years most of the medical colleges have come up in the private sector with inadequate facilities and they have been granted recognition while the government colleges with large clinical material have been facing problems from the MCI.

Dr Arun Mitra – Sr Vice President IDPD has said that the approach of the government of India does not seem to be to revamp the MCI and to get rid of the corruption in it but to favour its own people. Probably the present government wants to introduce some of its hidden agenda in the medical education as well.
