“The hearts of Punjabis should not just tick – they should beat strongly”
Ludhiana, April 1, 2018: A free cardiac and vascular checkup, prevention and treatment camp was organized by the Cardiac Care Centre – a unit of the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital - at Gurudwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha , E Block , BRS Nagar , Ludhiana on Sunday .
Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Dr Kulwant Singh and Dr Harjot Singh – super-specialists of the Cardiac Care Centre - said that the incidence of heart and vascular disease is high (approx. 6% of adult population ) in Punjab . Punjab reports a very high incidence of diabetes, high blood cholesterol level and obesity. These, in turn, manifest as cardiac problems. India accounts for nearly 50% of the world’s diabetics as per WHO statistics . It is also seen that Punjabis have more common involvement at younger age with smaller coronary arteries; diffuse distal disease, multi-vessel disease and higher incidence in women. The super-specialist heart doctors said that they would try to address the root cause of heart disease in Punjab. With a view to screen such cases and to reach out to them with the idea of teaching them ways to prevent heart and vascular disease they take a group of highly trained specialists and paramedical workers to reach out to the common man .
Outreach programmes are an integral and important part of the basic philosophy of the Cardiac Care Centre. Free consultations by super-specialists , free tests and medications are given and such camps are organized every month . A special part of the camp is the inclusion of individualized dietary counseling by a specialist and the teaching of heart healthy yoga techniques by a trained Yoga-Acharya - Mr Nirmal Singh - to all the people .
105 patients from different age groups were screened , counseled and treated at the camp. Of these 55 were found to be having heart problems. Among those 12 were children below 15 years of age.
Dr Bedi and Dr Kulwant reiterated the committment of the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital to promoting a positive health to the society.
The hearty news according to the heart doctors is that just simple lifestyle changes and regular exercise can dramatically reduce the chances of suffering from a heart attack. "Exercise daily for around 45 minutes and reduce stress in life," . Stress has to be on addressing the root cause of heart disease in Punjab. "Punjabi diet is very rich in calories as compared to that of the population living in the southern part of the country. It is for this reason that we are witnessing so many cases of people at young age having heart attacks," the experts said . Mr RS Chabbra , Mr RS Bhatia and Mr JS Khurana – from the Sri Guru Singh Sabha office bearers thanked the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital for this social service .
