CME on Cardio Vascular Surgery
Ludhiana, July 19, 2018: A Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme was conducted on 18 July by the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital and the All India Integrated Medical Association (AIIMA) in which Dr.Harinder Singh Bedi, Chairman Cardiac Sciences of the Cardiac Care Center (a unit of the Ludhiana Mediways Hospital) was the Orator. He delivered a talk on ‘Recent trends in Cardio Vascular Surgery ’.
Dr.Bedi elaborated on what was new in Cardio Vascular Surgery esp in the field of minimally invasive beating heart surgery and endovascular techniques .
Dr. Bedi informed the audience, “According to large International trials/studies including the very rigorous FREEDOM and SYNTAX trials, a diabetic patient with heart disease has a much better results with Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) than with stenting. In diabetics, there is a high rate of recurrence of blockage of heart arteries after stent placement .”
Dr. H.S. Bedi said, “The single most important advancement in bypass surgery in the last two decades has been the uniform acceptance of off-pump, beating heart Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery. Beating heart CABG benefits the high risk diabetic patients in a number of ways- lesser need of blood transfusion, less incidence of prolonged ventilation , less incidence of postoperative renal failure requiring dialysis and less disorders of heart rhythm. All these factors lead to reduced incidence of infection and a shorter stay in the hospital.” Dr Bedi is a pioneer in beating heart surgery having done the first in the World series of multivessel beating heart surgery with angiographic follow up .
Explaining the endovascular advances Dr Bedi told that the latest techniques where no cut is made are being used to treat varicose veins . He has recently been the first to use the endoglue technique which is an advance over the laser method .
Dr. H.S. Bedi said, “Continuous advancements in Cardio Vascular Surgery will ensure that risk to the patients continues to decline and the long-term results improve further in diabetics.” The talk was followed by an interactive session with the doctors. . Dr Anoop Aneja (President) and Dr S Dua (Secretary) of AIIMA thanked Dr Bedi for the informative lecture .
