Chandigarh, November 29, 2014: Heart disease is foremost killer and leading cause of disability in women globally, said the leading cardiologist Dr H K Bali. He was delivering talk on health and heart issues of women at Banyan Tree School, Sector 48 B.
Known for motivating patients to keep heart diseases at bay by taking preventive measures, Dr Bali emphasized that despite all the odds women have power to protect their heart and lower their risk for heart disease.
Listing measures to regain heart health in four weeks, he suggested motivating husband and family members quit smoking as passive smoking too affects the heart, and adhering to a low-cholesterol diet. He also motivated women to increase their physical activity by giving up elevator for stairs, dancing, giving up meat at least for one day, swapping fruits for a sweet dessert, trying to get eight hours sleep and practicing meditation to keep stress at an arms’ distance.
Dr Bali said that getting annual medical tests done was the key to identifying heart problems at their onset and taking required measures. Laying emphasis on healthy heart snacking, he then proposed that at least one day should be observed as salt free day wherein no salt should be taken.
He suggested women to calculate their risk for heart disease by calculating their body mass index regularly, and scheduling regular health check-ups.
Dr. Bali concluded by emphasising that the key to protecting one’s heart is in one’s own hands. Life style modifications can help keep heart disease at bay.
