Chandigarh, August 23, 2015: The Government of Punjab has announced setting up of Post Graduate Institute of Horticulture Research and Education at Amritsar.
Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the Horticulture Department said that with the establishment of this institute Punjab is set to become a leading State in Horticulture Research and the crop diversification projects will scale new heights. He further said that it will promote holistic growth of Horticulture sector including research, technology promotion and extension, post harvest management processing and marketing.
He added that under the National Horticulture Mission the government is committed to provide the basic amenities to improve the productivity by way of quality germplasm and planting material as well as develop water use efficiency through micro-irrigation. As a result, horticulture production would enhance to augment farmer’s income and strengthen nutritional security.
He said that the high powered team comprising officials from Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), state horticulture department and Punjab Agricultural University has visited half-a-dozen locations for setting up this Institute at Amritsar near the mixed fruit orchard at Attari on the international border. Initially, Attari orchard was the option but the team also visited several other locations to come up with the best possible option. The team has suggested having the building near the city with ample land available nearby for research purpose.
