Ludhiana, December 9, 2016: Government’s decision to scrap the import duty on wheat will ruin the farmers said the Communist Party of India (CPI) district Ludhiana and will give free market to the multinational companies like Monsanto and Cargill to sell their crops. It will make the sale of wheat particularly from New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the USA easy in our country. These countries give high subsidy to their farmers; for example the USA gives nearly 70% subsidy on wheat production whereas in our country it is only 6-7%. The farmers in our country are small land holdings who require more support from the government. Moreover the prices of fertilizers and the diesel are very high in India even though the petroleum prices have come down drastically in the world. Our excise taxes on diesel are high. All these factors make the wheat production expensive in our country as compared to the cost of production in the countries mentioned above. Number of people who are malnourished/undernourished is about 70% in our country whose number is likely to increase with this step.
