Chandigarh, March 25, 2019: The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University organized in its special lecture series, invited of Mr Sanam Suthirath Wazir, Senior Campaigner, Amnesty International India here today.
Mr Wazir kick-started the interaction by stating that it has now become tough to talk about social taboos, especially concerned to gender equality, at public spaces. Mr Sanam’s talk revolved around Gender Based Violence (GBV) which creates both physiological as well as psychological pressure on women. He emphasised on the importance of women first being economically independent. He then pointed out the unnoticed problems of women such as women being used as “tactics of violence”, rising number of cases of "quick character assassination", and ignorance towards existence of “Post Traumatic Stress Disorder” which women have to go through. Having shared many of his own experiences relating to an undefined culture, lack of freedom to expression and general unacceptability, he clearly initiated a thought process particularly amongst the men present. He ended with an urge asking everyone to simply stop accepting and start questioning the ‘usual’.
Dr.Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties emphasized that it is high time that we should start challenging gender stereotype in our society and the same should be started from our own families.
The session was followed up by questions from the students.
