Chennai, March 1, 2019: Fortis Malar Hospital along with the residents of Besant Nagar Kuppam conducted a drive to clean-up the streets of the Kuppam and its surroundings. Mr Nageshwaran, Facility Director, Fortis Malar Hospital and Ms Joy Kezia, Chief of Nursing, Fortis Malar Hospital educated the community on the need for a cleaner environment which was followed by a two hour cleanup activity. Actress Gomathi Priya along with fifty people took part in this activity and about 35 bags of garbage were cleared from the area. This initiative is a part of “Swachh Fortis” movement which is dedicated to support our honourable Prime Minister’s “Swachh Bharath” initiative.

Mr Nageshwaran commented on the occasion saying, “Uncollected garbage piles not only start to stink but also make a fertile breeding ground for various diseases. Our aim is to empower communities in and around Chennai to make a long lasting difference to their local environment through a sustained community effort to maintain a clean habitat. We have planned to organize this clean up in every kuppam from Pattinapakkam to Kovalam in the ECR stretch. We've seen real change take place in societies that have been educated on how and why to dispose garbage safely and also on the importance of recycling and reusing wherever possible.”

Ms Joy Kezia gave a detailed explanation on waste management and highlighted the need to segregate the waste and presented a practical demonstration for a better understanding. He also insisted that residents strictly follow the plastic ban as plastic plays a very important role in the breeding of dengue and malaria causing mosquitoes. Residents were provided with all the cleaning and safety gears required for carrying out the activity. The activity ended with the residents of Odaikuppam pledging to carry on regularly cleaning and maintenance in their region.

Mr. Manimaran, Odaikuppam Panchayath Thalaivar commented saying “It is important for us to keep a clean neighbourhood to lead a healthy lifestyle. People need to be educated on the importance and benefits of cleaning their house and surroundings, only then will real change happen and the community will prosper. We are happy that Fortis Malar has come forward to help us and educate all of us."
