Five years rigorous imprisonment with fine to then tax assistant of customs

New Delhi, August 1, 2014:The Special Judge for Central Bureau ofd Investigation (CBI) cases, Mumbai has sentenced Iona Furtado, then Tax Assistant, Refund Section, Air-Customs, Sahar, Mumbai to undergo five years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs. 20 Lakhs; Shri Suresh Pinto to undergo five years Rigorous Imprisonment with fine of Rs.10 Lakhs and 10 other persons to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment from three months to one year with fines ranging from Rs. 50,000 to 2.50 Lakh in a forgery case.

CBI had registered case against  Iona Furtado, Tax Asstt. Refund Section, Air-Customs, Sahar, Mumbai and others on 08-12-98. U/s. 120-B, r/w.420 and 420,201,409,468,469,471,477(A) of IPC and  U/s. 13(2) r/w. 13(1) (d) of  PC Act-1988 for abusing official position  & cheated the Mumbai Customs by way of  preparing & using forged cheques and false supporting documents for obtaining refunds from  the Bombay Customs.

A charge sheet was filed on 30-6-2001 in the court of Special Judge, Mumbai against Smt. Iona Furtado, Tax Asstt. and others.

The Trial Court found the said accused guilty and convicted them.
