Ludhiana, March 6, 2017: Regional Research Station, Gurdaspur of Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana in collaboration with India Meteorological Department (IMD), New Delhi, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt of India, has organized a ‘Farmers Awareness Programme’ under Gramin Krishi Mausam Sewa (GKMS) scheme for the farmers of Hoshiarpur district on March 3 at A B Sugar Mill, Dasuya. In this occasion, Dr.R S Singh, Director, RRS, Gurdaspur has elaborated the harmful effect of climatic variability and climate change on agriculture over the sub-mountainous region of Punjab. He has also shared the useful new techniques to mitigate climatic vagaries and encouraged the farmers to utilize valuable advisories provided by AMFU to tackle such problems. Sri V P Singh, Vice President (Cane), A B Sugar Mill, Dasuya, graced the occasion as chief guest. In his address, he hailed the usefulness of timely and accurate weather related information in day to day farming activities. He also solicited that each and every farmer of the region should avail the free services of the GKMS scheme. Sri Pankaj Kumar, Deputy General Manager (Cane) also told the farmers that it how it became very easy to deliver accurate and timely advisories to farmers using mobile phone and encouraged the farmers to take most advantage of the free services provided by IMD and AMFUs. Dr. Barun Biswas, Asstt. Agrometeorologist, RRS, Gurdaspur has apprised the farmers about the free SMS service for obtaining timely weather based agro-advisory to minimize losses due to weather extremes and related hazards. He also asked the participants to encourage fellow farmers to avail this free service. Dr. Bhupinder Singh, Assoc. Dean, Institute of Agriculture, Gurdaspur has proficiently managed the stage and also elaborated the objectives and services provided by IMD and AMFUs. The Farmers Awareness Programme has been attended by around 100 farmers from different blocks of Hoshiarpur district.
