Educational trip to IISER Mohali by Sardar Balbir Singh Centre for Sciences, Lyallpur Khalsa College
Jalandhar, October 30, 2019: An education trip for the students of B.Sc and M.Sc (Life Sciences and Biotechnology) was organized by S.Balbir Singh Centre for Sciences to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, (IISER) Mohali on 25.09.2019. College Principal Dr.Gurpinder Singh Samra gave the go ahead to the trip and informed that the program was organized with the aim to provide a platform to the students ensuring their acquaintance with the latest technologies in the area of life sciences and biotechnology. Dr.Samra appreciated such efforts for the development of scientific temper amongst the students. As a part of the trip, students visited Academic Building I (AB1) and Academic Building II (AB2) of the IISER, which has the major teaching and research laboratories for Biology and Biotechnology. The students were shown a documentary regarding the concept and the inception of the IISERs in India (in general) and IISER Mohali in particular. Mr.Rakesh Kumar from IISER Mohali led the students to various labs of IISER and helped them understand the working of various advanced instruments such as inverted and confocal microscope and also showed the live cell imaging of the nerve cells through the use of these instruments. Further, the students were also demonstrated the scanning electron microscope, atomic force microscope its principle and working by the research students of this department. The students visited the teaching labs where some advanced models of commonly used instruments such as PCR Machine, automated laminar air flow, table-top centrifuges, microscopes, shakers and other such instruments were placed. Students were accompanied by faculty members namely, Dr. Gurpreet Singh, Coordinator, S. Balbir Singh Centre for Sciences along with Dr. Harsharan Singh and Prof. Navjot Kaur from the Biotechnology Department.
