DSO celebrates `National Sports Day’

Ludhiana, August 29, 2012: District Sports Office, Ludhiana celebrated National Sports Day in the sweet memory of Hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand in Guru Nanak Stadium Basketball Stadium, here today.

Rishipal Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development), Ludhiana was the chief guest on the.

Rishipal gave tributes to the legend and distributed prizes to the winners.

Kartar Singh, District Sports Officer also paid tributes to the legendary hockey wizard and informed thatfor his extra-ordinary services to the nation, the Government of India celebrates Dhyan Chand’s birthday on every August 29 as National Sports Day.

The Indian Postal Service issued a postage stamp in his memory, and the Dhyan Chand National Stadium at New Delhi has been named after him. He was honored by the Padma Bhushan award by the Government of India in the year 1956 and he alsoassured that all efforts are being made for the promotion of sports in the district especially in the rural areas.

Teja Singh, General Secretary, Punjab Basketball Association, Jagbir Grewal, Secretary, District Hockey Association and coaches and staff of District Sports Office, Ludhiana were also present on the occasion.
